Are You Freaking Kidding Me?

NOTE: This blog post was written in March, but I didn’t hit “Publish” by accident. So this is older, but I wanted to get it out because I still think it’s important.

A photo of the activist from Marjory Stone Douglas High School, where SEVENTEEN INNOCENT HUMAN BEINGS WERE SLAUGHTERED by a shady motherfucker who had been reported the proper authorities as PROBLEMATIC, yet still got to go on a gun buying spree, has been making the rounds on social media as an example of what happens when a political party brainwashes youth to further their agenda. See? (Sidebar: anytime you try to compare Hitler to basically anything in modern times, you lose. Hitler was…HITLER.)

Still, the students at Stoneman Dougas seem to have a closed fist, whist the Hitler youth are saluting. Certainly, no one has used a closed fist or raised palm before, ever in the history of the world. Otherwise, this meme would be shitty propaganda. Trumpkins would never, right? Let’s just double check.

Well, damn. These are Black Panthers exercising their 1st Amendment Rights. Clearly this is an anomaly. Even though it’s a raised closed fist vs Hitler’s flat hand kids, this is ONE TIME!

Top photo: Emmeline Parker and fellow suferagete, raising their fists for equality, circa 1908 from prison. Second photo: 1960s-1970s, American black women protesting with the Black Panthers.

These kids; MY KID, have been through active shooter drills for years. I remember being a kid in small Shelby, Montana, when we had regular fire drills. I remember them being a little bit scary, but also kinda fun because our school was crazy safe and it was a nice break from class. My son is 18 and graduated last year. He’s a pretty tough nut to crack. He’s always been stoic and reasonable, but on active shooter drill days, he’d come home shaken. He’s always been almost too honest with me, but on those days, my unshakable kid was shaken, and he didn’t want to discuss it with me at all. It took him a few days to process and put it out of his mind.

These kids were in an actual active shooter situation. Maybe the shooter didn’t reach their classroom. Maybe he didn’t kill or wound their close friends. Maybe he just shot the kid you’d nodded at in the hall. Maybe they didn’t even know the football coach who was murdered when he threw his large body in front of a group of children he might not have even met. He probably didn’t know all of their names, but he sacrificed his life for them. Because they were CHILDREN.

The first school shooting I remember was Columbine. I was pregnant with my only child and I sat in front of the TV sobbing. Wondering how hard it would be to bring a child into this kind of world. With every. Damn. School. Shooting. Afterward. Wondering when it would be my kid. Crying right along with Lester Holt when he learned what happened at Sandy Hook only when he read it to the nation live from his teleprompter. These kids that are leading marches right now? They were born just after Columbine. They’re pretty close to the same age that the Sandy Hook kids would be had they been afforded the chance to go home from school alive, if my math is correct. The realities of crazy people with AR-15s and high capacity magazines coming into schools and shooting their peers randomly has been their every day reality. So, fine. Take their pictures. Call them Nazi Lesbians or ignorant kids infected with affluenza. Take a snapshot of them at one moment in time and compare it to anything from the whole of human history if it makes you feel better and suits your agenda. The fact is, these kids don’t have all the answers. Neither do you. Neither do I. If we did, this wouldn’t happen. If we did, kindergartners wouldn’t have to know how to lock themselves in a closet or a cubby and not make a sound. But these kids are DONE with the lip service. Done with the thoughts and prayers in press releases when things go on as they always have in America, with a mass shooting every 32-60 hours, depending on the source. Done with our leaders shrugging their shoulders while this happens regularly in our country almost never happens in other first world countries. Tell the Stoneman they’re wrong, that you don’t agree with them. If that’s how you feel, fine. We don’t all agree on gun control or how to stop these shootings. It’s a super complex issue, and I’d love to think that changing a law would magically fix it, but it won’t. We have a gun problem in this country, and we have a heart problem in this country.

These kids don’t have the answers, but it’s belittling and demeaning for anyone to say they have no idea what they’re talking about. They live it. MSDHS is in a highly rated school academically, and a lot of the kids who have come forward as activists are honor students. In fact, 64% of the student body takes AP courses, which is a really high number. They’ve been using critical thinking, research, and writing for years to earn those 4.3% GPAs. They know how to take complex issues and do analysis. If you spend time with any high school junior or senior that has an interest in politics and has been working to get into a good college and earn scholarships so they don’t graduate with a bachelor’s degree and $100k in debt, you’ll probably be shocked at just how much they know about the world they live in. They’re technologically savvy and know far more than most adults over the age of 35 how to sort through news sources to check for bias and fake news. Some of them are conservative, and some of them are liberal. If you want to push a narrative that David Hogg and Emma Gonzalez have no idea what they’re talking about and are just paid George Soras shills repeating his news and agenda without their own thoughts, you’re dead wrong. Yes, someone is paying for their travel. Is it Soras? I don’t know. Could be true in part. However, MSDHS is in Parkland, FL, with a median income of $131,340. That’s more than twice the median income of the USA. It’s very possible that their parents are supporting them in this.

These kids generally have lived a life of privilege, from my research, but it’s not only affluent white kids who have an interest in politics and this country. I’ve had the honor of following https://www.instagram.com/realisticpolitics/  for a couple of years. When I first found this account, the author was a 16 year old male who identified himself as a conservative Filipino from “the hood.” He wasn’t born into a wealthy family, but still put together a really well informed politigram account as a hobby. I asked him if he was doing it for a school project, and he said that his teachers would be shocked if they knew about it. Where he lives, being smart and into politics isn’t cool, and could be potentially dangerous. He did this for FUN. Over the past couple of years, he’s changed his position and registered as a Democrat, but the hours and hours and hours of research he put into that decision seriously impressed me. He’s not the only one. Today’s kids know a hell of a lot more than we give them credit for. Just because a few morons eat Tide Pods to get internet famous, don’t get it twisted. We are raising the most informed generation in US History, and their activism, by and large, can’t be bought. I, for one, am thrilled by this.

You don’t have to be, but that’s OK. Just don’t take a snapshot and make a stupid correlation without checking out the facts. I mean, if I did that, it could look like this.
